Decor-Chapter 15

As a former Interior Design student, decor is VITAL. Know the balance between too much and too little decor. And with a flower shop, your decor is basically what you sell. You can create so many possibilities that are in the reach of your clients.

Showrooms are showcasing your products actually in use so your clients can envision what your products can do in their own homes. You can show off how certain plants can look in a house, in proportion to furniture, lamps, and the ceiling.

There are many design principles that come into play when dealing with decor. The use of negative space, the color palette of the interior, and the decor in the space.

Storefront Window Shopping-Chapter 14

Your storefront really says so much about you and your business. Your front window is seen by everyone, not just people entering your shop. This is the first impression you and your business give to the world.

Have you ever seen a really unimpressive window display for a store and made an instant decision to not go inside? Because I have!

The storefront is where your future customers will decide if they want to be in business with you or not.

Show the world why you started you business in the first place. Do your best to make it look as attractive as possible. If you don’t have the right resources, you can make up for it  by your service and the atmosphere.

Insects, Pests, & Disease- Chapter 12 & 13

Insects are everywhere. Yup. I said it. They are inevitable, like Thanos. In some cases, they can be harmless, but can still cause some big problems. Insects affecting a plant is known as an infestation. They can be invasive and can carry diseases to plants as well.

Most times, infestations can be dealt with in a few ways. Horticulturists can place the plant in quarantine in order to ensure the infestation or infection doesn’t spread to other plants who are in close proximity. If the insects are causing too many issues, they can be gently removed with an oil and alcohol solution. In some serious cases, the plant may just have to be discarded if the infestation is too severe.

The top 5 most common plant pests are: Aphids, Mealybugs, Scale, Spider-mites and whiteflies.

“Plant diseases can be described as any pathogens and environmental conditions that adversely affect the normal growth and development of plants” (Chapter 13-Introduction).

To prevent diseases, don’t place plants too close to one another in an installation. Allow air flow between plants, most diseases flourish when the air is stagnant. Make sure not to place new plants in old soil where a disease may be lurking. Keep plants sanitized  and clean. This keeps them healthy and relatively pathogen free.

Diseases can also be caused by fungi. Thee most common kinds are Anthracnose (Collectrotrichum, Glomerella) , Root and Crown Rot (Rhizoctonia, Pythium) , Botrytis (Botrytis cinerea), Powdery Mildew (Oidium spp.), and Fungal Leaf Spots.

Water & Soil- Chapter 11

Growing up in Arizona, it was always important to stay hydrated, especially in hotter temperatures. We were always taught to drink enough water to keep our tongues moist, weird, I know. But this also applies to watering your plants.

Don’t drown your plants because the water can suck out the nutrients in the soil that the plants need. In my home gardening class, we’re told to water our plants infrequent and deep. We don’t need to water our plants everyday, this is so they can absorb the water properly. To water deep is to water enough so the water drips out of the bottom of the container or pot so all the soil is dampened throughout.

The temperature of the water also is a key factor in keeping the plants alive and happy. Don’t water a tropical plant with cold water because the plant wasn’t created to withstand cold temperatures. Warmer water helps cut flowers open up to a full bloom. Use room-temperature water to water plants because it’s not cold enough to shock the plants, but not hot enough to kill them.

Light- Chapter 10

Ahhh… sunlight. We all need it. If we didn’t have it, we’d all be dead. But, if we get too much of it, we’d be dead. Its all about finding that perfect balance of light for things to grow and flourish. Humans don’t have the ability to photosynthesize, but plants do! They take sunlight and convert it into food so they can grow. Plants grown outdoors (natural light) have no problem getting enough sunlight to survive, but what about plants used indoors?

Indoor plants have to adapt to diffused light. This light is diffused by window and curtains and can block a lot of the light that the plants need, but let enough in so they can survive. If diffused light isn’t available, then artificial is the next best thing.

Artificial light can be created by placing a special plant light by the plants to help them photosynthesize. Artificial light can also be used as supplemental light for plants to help increase light intensity for indoor plants who may be getting diffused light.

Sure you can take your plant for a walk if it isn’t getting enough light inside, but be careful because this can do more harm than good.
